JAKARTA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior vessel arrived in Indonesia's coral reef-rich destination of Raja Ampat in easternmost province of Papua, campaigning for consistent joint efforts of central and regional authorities to preserve the coral reef ecosystem in the country.

The call for an improved efforts to address the sea ecosystem in Indonesia's coral reefs was significant as Indonesia was identified as having the world's most diverse coral reefs with 569 different kinds of reefs being detected in its waters so far, a statement released by Greenpeace said on Monday.

However, Greenpeace said that 35.15 percent of Indonesia's 2.5 million hectares of coral reefs were apparently damaged at the moment.

"Greenpeace pushes forward the central government to provide supports for regional governments and people in the region to ensure effectiveness of sea ecosystem management and the network in doing so," Greenpeace Indonesia Sea Campaigner Arifsyah Nasution said in the statement.

The central government can provide regulation and intensive monitoring system that is jointly conducted with the regional government to enforce the sea environment management.

Meanwhile, for the same purpose, people should fish in a sustainable way, Arifsyah said.

Raja Ampat is famous for its rich marine biodiversity. It sees a regretful mishap when a British cruise ship, Caledonian Sky, stranded in its coral reef area in March last year, causing serious damage on the coral reef canopy in the area.

Rainbow Warrior was in Papua to start its 2-month Indonesian voyage that would be continued to Bali and Jakarta.
