Three-wheeler taxis to be metered from May on in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, April 11 (Xinhua) -- All three-wheeler taxis operating in Sri Lanka will be fitted with metres after April 30, an official here said on Wednesday.

Chairman of the Sri Lankan National Council for Road Safety Sisira Kodagoda told Xinhua that some three-wheeler taxis had been metered, but many taxis had not yet been metered.

He said the operators of three-wheeler taxi services should issue a printed bill to their passengers indicating the fare and the distance from April 30, 2018.

The chairman added, a six-month grace period would be given to the operators to get adjusted to the new requirements.

According to the chairman, traffic police have been instructed to arrest any three-wheeler drivers who don't give the passenger the bill.

Currently, there are around 750,000 operating three-wheelers as taxis in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga said this would be a wise move for the benefit of tourists visitng Sri Lanka.

"We also want to ensure hassle-free travel for tourists in Sri Lanka," the Minister told Xinhua.
