HAVANA, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez met with visiting U.S. Senator Jeff Flake and Google's former CEO Eric Schmidt on Monday to discuss the setbacks in ties between the United States and the Caribbean nation.

The three had a "productive meeting" in which they discussed U.S.-Cuba relations and the negative impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's revival of Cold War-era policy, according to a statement from the ministry.

Rodriguez thanked Flake's interest in improving ties between the two countries.

Though Flake is a Republican, like Trump, the Arizona senator has traveled to Cuba on numerous occasions and supports several legislative initiatives to lift the U.S. economic embargo against the island nation and end travel restrictions on U.S. citizens who want to visit the Caribbean nation.

Also participating in the meeting were the U.S. charge d'affaires in Cuba, Philip Goldberg, and Google's senior consultant for Cuba, Brett Perlmutter.

In 2015, the United States and Cuba reestablished diplomatic relations after decades of hostility. Then U.S. President Barack Obama visited the island in 2016.

However, the White House has scaled back relations and cooperation to a minimum since Trump decided last year to revert to Washington's former foreign policy towards Cuba.
