Heat wave continues to scorch New York City

NEW YORK, July 2 (Xinhua) -- It could feel as hot as about 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 degrees Celsius) with high humidity in New York City on Monday as a result of a prolonged heat wave.

A heat advisory is in effect in the city's five boroughs until 9 p.m. and an air quality alert until 11 p.m. on Monday. City officials recommend residents limiting strenuous activity.

A high temperature near 96 degrees Fahrenheit (35.5 degrees Celsius) and heat index values near 99 degrees Fahrenheit (37.2 degrees Celsius) are expected to hit Central Park, New York City, on Monday, according to National Weather Service.

Monday marks the third straight day with temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32.2 degrees Celsius). The heat index hit a scorching 102 degrees Fahrenheit (38.8 degrees Celsius) in Central Park on Sunday afternoon, showed the weather service figures.

The New York City Emergency Management and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are urging city residents to take extra precautions to stay cool this week.

"The hot weather will continue into the week and we urge people to keep safe," said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito in a press release. "Drink plenty of water, use air conditioning or go to an air-conditioned place, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the periods of intense heat."

All the cooling centers, such as libraries, community centers, senior centers, will be open through Wednesday throughout the city to help residents beat the heat.
