Judge orders former Trump campaign chair Manafort be moved to jail closer to D.C.

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Xinhua) -- A federal judge on Tuesday ordered that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort be moved to a jail in Alexandria, state of Virginia.

Manafort had been held at the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Virginia, about two hours' drive from Washington D.C.

Last week, the former Trump campaign aide requested his trial be delayed until this fall because his location made it difficult to consult with lawyers.

U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis, who is overseeing Manafort's trial in Alexandria on tax and bank fraud charges, ordered that his chambers be notified by relevant authorities once Manafort is moved.

Ellis said Manafort's transfer is "to ensure that the defendant has access to his counsel and can adequately prepare his defense," according to local reports.

Manafort is also facing a separate trial in Washington D.C. on charges of money laundering and fraud conspiracy, which is scheduled for September.

Last month, a federal judge revoked Manafort's bail and ordered him to jail pending trial, citing newly filed obstruction of justice charges.

Manafort, who has been kept in jail since then, pleaded not guilty to all charges against him.

He is among several former Trump associates to face indictment or plead guilty thus far in special counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and ties between the Trump campaign and Moscow.
