ROME, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Spring Festival is a moment of renewal for families across China and around the world, and this sense of hope is especially meaningful as global food security continues to face mounting pressures, a top Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) official told Xinhua in a recent interview.

FAO Deputy Director-General Maurizio Martina said global food systems are under strain from conflicts, economic shocks and the accelerating impacts of climate extremes, with many countries struggling to maintain production, stabilize markets and support vulnerable communities.

Nevertheless, he expressed optimism for the year ahead, saying more and more countries now recognize that transforming agrifood systems is "no longer just desirable, it is essential." He noted a stronger commitment to climate-resilient agriculture, digital innovation, and more efficient and inclusive food systems.

Martina said FAO is moving forward with renewed determination, guided by four transformational pathways set by Director-General Qu Dongyu. The pathways are shifting from crisis response to resilience, from input-intensive to knowledge-intensive systems, from fragmented efforts to stronger synergies, and from global commitments to concrete local action.

In an uncertain world, Martina said FAO's role is "unique and indispensable," as it brings together global data, technical expertise and a strong field presence to help countries prevent crises, respond quickly when they occur and build lasting resilience.

Looking toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Martina called for stronger investment in resilience as climate- and conflict-related shocks become more frequent, faster progress toward knowledge-intensive agriculture using digital tools, real-time data and artificial intelligence, and better coordination to overcome fragmented efforts.

He stressed that global commitments must translate into concrete, localized action, with country-led programming ensuring that farmers, especially small-scale producers, benefit directly from international cooperation.

For the upcoming Lunar New Year, Martina said his message to global partners is one of shared responsibility and shared opportunity. The Year of the Horse, he added, symbolizes energy, progress and determination, calling on all sides to work together to end hunger and build more resilient and sustainable agrifood systems. ■
