KABUL, April 9 (Xinhua) -- At least one commuter was killed and 35 others injured in a road accident in eastern Afghanistan's Nangarhar province on Wednesday night, a local police official reported on Thursday.
The incident occurred on the outskirts of Jalalabad, the provincial capital, when a vehicle transporting returnees lost control due to a technical fault, veered off the road and overturned, official Bakhtar News Agency quoted Sayed Tayeb Hemad, provincial police spokesman.
Hemad confirmed that one individual died on the spot, while 35 others sustained injuries. The wounded were transported to nearby health facilities, and their conditions were reported to be stable.
Preliminary findings indicate that reckless driving contributed to the crash, the official added.
Road accidents are a leading cause of death in Afghanistan, where thousands of people are killed each year. Poor road conditions, lack of traffic signs, vehicle overloading, speeding and reckless driving are frequently cited as factors on the country's often congested and dilapidated highways. ■
