OSLO, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- American Alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin won her sixth World Cup title of the season, the 37th of her career, in a city event here on Monday while Swedish Andre Myhrer took the men's race.

The 22-year-old Shiffrin narrowly beat Switzerland's Wendy Holdener by 0.17 seconds in the final, while Holdener's teammate Melanie Meillard, 19, defeated Frida Hansdotter of Sweden in the small final for third place to get her first career podium finish.

With this victory, Shiffrin further extended her lead in the World Cup standings with 981 points, far ahead of second-placed Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany who has collected 510 points.

"For me, this is totally different than GS or slalom, or a traditional ski race because you have the person next to you. And I always know that my competitors really want to win - everybody wants to win," Shiffrin said.

"Especially tonight with Wendy. She is so hungry, and I have to think, 'OK I have to be hungry, too, and I have to be tougher and a little bit crazy.' And it worked out really well for me. It's not always that way. ... You have to really dig deep," she added.

The men's final saw Austrian Michael Matt against Myhrer, who had three previous podiums in city events. It turned out to be an easy triumph for Myhrer as Matt fell down in the final run to hand the Swede his eighth career win.

The Alpine skiing World Cup will move on to slalom races in Zagreb, Croatia later this week.
