English Premier League strugglers WBA fire chairman, CEO in boardroom clear-out (updated)

LONDON, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese owner of bottom-of-the-table English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion has fired the chairman and CEO in a boardroom clear-out.

More than 50 points behind table toppers Manchester City, WBA have won just 3 of its 27 matches.

The club, owned by Chinese businessman Lai Guochuan, and based in the Midlands region of England, confirmed the move Tuesday on its official website.

The statement said: "Chairman John Williams and Chief Executive Martin Goodman have been given notice of termination of their contracts and have been placed on garden leave with immediate effect."

Following his recent appointment as a director of WBA Holdings, the club's controlling company, Mark Jenkins is returning to be the football club's CEO. These changes follow Albion's poor results this season which currently see the Club at the bottom of the Premier League.

A club spokesperson said: "We would like to thank John and Martin for all their efforts since their appointments and wish them well for the future."

Jenkins, who was previously CEO of the football club for 14 years, ten of which were spent in the Premier League, said: "There is much to do but for now the focus must solely be on the remaining games of this season."

Speaking to media in Britain, Williams admitted responsibility, "It is an odd feeling, it's certainly unusual. We had gone through a managerial change but it's a results-based game and I accept my part in that. As top of the managerial tree, you have to take responsibility."
