BERLIN, June 24 (Xinhua) -- A lately-published German-language book featuring conversations with 12 elite theater directors from China made its debut at an international conference on theatre art which ended here on Sunday.

The book "Director Art Today -- Voices and Positions from China" (translated from German), collects essays of and interviews with 12 theatric artists in China and unfolds a panorama of the diverse theater landscape of the country.

It was highlighted at a podium discussion of the International Conference -- Dynamics of Interweaving Performance Cultures held from Thursday to Sunday at the Berlin-based Academy of Arts.

The book was co-edited by Tian Mansha, Professor with Shanghai Theater Academy, and Torsten Jost, a faculty member of the Institute for Theatre Studies of the Free University of Berlin, and both of them being interviewers of the 12 directors.

Tian told Xinhua that, there has been a deficit in the knowledge of China, and Chinese theatre in particular, in the western world, as compared to the other way around. "This book is a faithful profile of modern and contemporary Chinese artists, including their thinking, creative methodologies and inspirations."

Jost said during their interviews with the Chinese directors, he found all the directors were very open and unpretentious in talking about their ideas, sharing their goals, which impressed him very much.

"With this book, you learn something about directing, theater art and China through particular lenses," he told Xinhua.
