PARIS, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in a northwestern French commune have banned swimming and diving off its beaches due to an amorous dolphin, local media reported.

Roger Lars, the mayor of Landévennec, said he issued the order after a number of bathers were terrified by the 10-foot (about 3.05 meters) bottlenose dolphin, known as Zafar, said to be a common sight in the waters off northwestern France's Brittany.

Though considered friendly and non-aggressive, recent attempts by the dolphin in heat to be more intimate with swimmers and boats by rubbing against them have triggered safety concerns.

Last month, Zafar tried to prevent a swimmer from returning to land, requiring rescue efforts by the coast guard. It also leapt over a kayaker's head and recently, appeared to have thrown a bather in the air. Local media reported that Zafar is looking for a mate.

The ban will be in force whenever Zafar is sighted and offenders risk being fined 39 euros (45.6 U.S. dollars).

A local lawyer said he would challenge the restriction, saying the mayor has overstepped his authority and harmed the positive approach people have toward dolphins.

However, in a tweet Tuesday, the French prefect of Finistère said it supports the practical decision taken by the mayor since the ban ensures security for people, including experienced swimmers.
