SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Global governments have recommitted to accelerate progress towards attaining the existing Aichi targets at the end of the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Sharm el Sheik, Egypt on Thursday.

"The governments have agreed to work within their own development plans to meet the targets set by UN towards conservation of biodiversity," said Cristiana Palmer, executive secretary of the secretariat of the Conservation of Biodiversity.

She noted that the governments have also agreed to work together on an ambitious roadmap to the post 2020 global biodiversity framework.

Ministers demonstrated high-level political commitment towards these objectives through the "Sharm el-Sheikh Declaration Investing in Biodiversity for People and the Planet," she noted.

Palmer noted that the African ministerial summit produced a ministerial declaration as well as the Pan-African Action Agenda on Ecosystem Restoration for Increased Resilience during the conference.

The delegates also successfully adopted voluntary guidelines for the design and effective implementation of ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.

Others areas discussed at the conference included digital sequence information, marine and coastal biodiversity and Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) within the Cartagena protocol.

During the conference, a Sharm el-Sheikh declaration "Investing in Biodiversity for People and Planet" was launched by Egypt, China and the Secretariat of the Sharm el-Sheikh to Beijing "Action Agenda for People and Nature."

The UN Biodiversity Conference 2018 was opened by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Nov. 13 in Egypt's Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh and ended on Nov. 29.

Representatives from over 190 states participate the conference under the slogan of "investing in biodiversity for people and plan."
