BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Hospital Clinic de Barcelona will on Wednesday perform a pioneering operation which will be transmitted in real time at the Mobile World Congress (MWC2019) thanks to 5G streaming.

5G internet and the possibilities it allows are the key topics at the MWC2019 which is currently being held here.

Chinese companies such as Huawei, ZTE, Xiaomi and OPPO have all released their 5G-related new products during MWC19.

Wednesday's operation will show the benefits in healthcare as a team of surgeons will carry out an operation from the Hospital Clinic's "Optimus" operating theater. Optimus is equipped with 5G technology to allow the operation to be beamed in real time to the MWC2019 site at the "Fira" exhibition center, around three km away.

The operation will be a laparoscopy and it will be broadcast on screens in the Fira where another surgeon will give instructions, which is made possible by the almost total absence of latency in transmitting the images permitted by 5G broadband speed.

Speaking in the newspaper "20 Minutos", the CEO of the Hospital Clinic said the operation represented "a great opportunity to incorporate technology, which will be of great use to patients and society, especially for the chronically ill, who will be able to be monitored from hospital," while at home.
