WINDHOEK, March 11 (Xinhua) -- For Namibia to become more competitive in the rugby 7's junior circuit, there is need to introduce a 7's league for schools, according to the Namibia rugby schools representative, Ainsley Daniels.

Daniels said this in an interview Monday with Xinhua following the concluded International Capricorn Group 7's Rugby Tournament which took place in Windhoek from March 8-9.

The South Africa Under-18 7's team managed to convincingly win the tournament after they beat Germany 29-5 to retain the cup for the third consecutive year ahead of other speed merchants from Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

"South Africa is in a unique position and has players that are groomed in the SA Academy, where they receive intense training in a variety of leagues. In total contrast to South Africa, Namibia only plays in the Capricorn Sevens, the regional COSSASA games and the SARU Inter-provincial Sevens only when invited," he added

According to Daniels, this year a private individual has decided to start the Namibia Gravity Cup to assist in the development of the code in the country.

"Since the Gravity Cup is new, not all schools participate due to the high registration fee. Hopefully the organizers will ease on the registration fee and more schools will participate," he said.

Daniels said in the meantime, Namibia needs to focus more on attracting more players to get involved in the 7's code.

"We need to get our players physically and mentally in the right condition to play sevens," he added.
